SYNOPSIS

A piece by Mariana Blanco and Alicia Laguna, created in collaboration with women coffee producers from the community of Pluma Hidalgo.

Variations on Coffee is the first result of a research project that intertwines the lives of women coffee producers and classifiers from the community of Pluma Hidalgo with a woman who has never worked in agriculture. It is a weaving of bodies and feelings among women of different cultures and traditions, as well as ancestral practices and everyday life.

How much of what lies behind it do we see?

A collaboratively constructed dramaturgy in which both universes intersect. An invitation to contemplate and reflect on the processes behind what we consume.
The installation transitions organically into the performance. The piece begins with a journey through 23 bags of parchment coffee beans of varying weights, each containing a record of thoughts and feelings experienced during the counting process. These bags can be touched, manipulated, and read.

Variations on Coffee is a piece that keeps transforming because it is an ongoing investigation about women coffee classifiers in the Pluma Hidalgo community and about the existence of the performer herself.

"Rosario told me I could forget everything, even her, but not the taste of good coffee... behind that taste there's invisible work. I think that's what she doesn't want me to forget, what's behind what we see..."
