SYNOPSIS
An antique is a fragment of history, a piece of intimacy that was lost, forgotten, inherited, traded, and recovered. By acquiring it, one acquires a portion of the past and the privilege of continuing to write its story.
Paipai Rouge runs the antique shop she inherited from her father, Olivier, who in turn inherited it from her mother, Marie. Marie started in the business selling the objects she received as an inheritance from Madame Plume, the great star of the Ringling Bros. circus. That was her only inheritance; she was denied the inheritance of affection, of time, of presence. Her mother was committed to art, and her father didn't even want to be around.
Paipai spends hours in the shop imagining the past lives of each object. Occasionally, a customer bursts in, but these visits rarely end in a purchase. Through the objects, we enter into small stories from the past that make us reflect on modern times. These stories intertwine with those of Madame Plume: her journey as an artist, her father's rejection, and her regrets at the end of her life.
