"Theatre doesn't have to be fiction, or art, or technique... Theatre has to be feeling, emotion and, above all else, the pleasure of transgressing established norms... We must put on the stage all our miseries, our anxieties, our unconfessed desires, our fears."

SYNOPSIS
Paris, 178... Gabriel de Beaumont, a renowned actor, is invited by the Marquis de..., an aristocrat famous for his extravagant tastes, to visit him at his palace. There, he is commissioned to perform in a play about the death of Socrates, written by the Marquis himself. He soon discovers that it is all a trap set by the Marquis to subject him to a cruel experiment on reality and representation in relation to the theme of death. Originally written as an "enlightened dialogue," The Poison of the Theater soon abandons, through its two characters, the realm of pure theoretical speculation and enters the realm of the practicalities of dramatic play.
